If the idea of potty training your cat seems incredibly cute to you, it probably means you have no experience of actually doing it. Kittens and cats may be adorable, but some of the presents they leave behind for us aren’t.

Potty training your cat soon after it enters your home is extremely important for everyone. Cats are essentially very clean animals, as you’ll have noticed if you’ve even spent time watching them preen themselves. Because they have innate good habits, they’ll feel a lot more comfortable in their new environment if they have an established place in which to perform their necessary bodily functions.

As a new owner, potty training your cat is important on many levels. Fist and foremost comes hygiene. You’ll want waste from your cat to be confined to as small an area as possible, and that means a litter tray filled with suitable sand.

Cat waste is potentially harmful to humans, and contact with it is undesirable to say the least. Toxoplasmosis is one disease that can be transmitted to humans via kitten waste.

An Internet search of the different methods of cat potty training will reveal that some owners have somehow trained cats to use real toilets. This is not an ordinary way of potty training your cat, and we recommend a more conventional method!

General opinion is that best way of potty training your cat involves repeated lessons in where it’s acceptable to pee. Cats need to be watched, and when they adopt a position that suggests they’re in need you should move them to their tray. After some time, cats will know where they’re supposed to go and begin to feel territorial about their trays.

As a final point, keep trays clean so that cats stay happy.

On the face of it, training your cat to use the toilet may seem to be an impossible task. However on the contrary, cat potty training is not as impossible as it sounds. Don’t expect anything to happen overnight; you need time and patience to be successful in training your cat.

The reason it is possible to train cats is because they are intelligent animals. However when compared to humans, its behavior is more dependant on instincts than habit. Cats generally follow the instinct of scratching and covering the urine and feces; so an essential part of cat potty training is to stop this instinct.

The market offers many products you can use for toilet training cats. These products come with inserts that fit into the toilet, making it possible for cats to use cat litter. Your cat thus considers, and treats this insert as a litter box till it gets familiar with it.

Consequently, your cat has to get used to using the toilet seat while defecating. To enable this, your toilet should also provide for such training by perhaps being able to fit a shallow pail under the toilet seat.

If you have a spare bathroom, you could switch off the toilet water while you toilet train your cat. Of course, you switch on the water as your cat progresses. And once your cat is used to using a homemade trainer or insert, you move on to the next step, which requires placing a hole on the device or insert.

With the passage of weeks, you can not only increase the size of the hole, but your cat gets used to using lesser amounts of litter. Eventually, it will get used to doing its business without the use of cat litter, and this is when you have completed your cat potty training.
